I haven’t believed in God for my whole life.
And I’ve never found (and, boy, have I searched for them) convincing arguments to start believing in it.
At home, being an atheist is sort of like a family tradition. We are kinda proud of it, like there is nowadays all those trendy hipster types becoming atheists as grown-ups but we were born into it, we are the real shit, we have the atheistic pedigree.
But for this same familiarity with atheism, I’ve never felt too attracted to reading or watching content created by atheists. It wasn’t exciting, it wasn’t new. I had already heard enough good arguments against the existence of God so I would rather be challenged with alternative worldviews by people who did believe in God.
But this morning I woke up to a cell phone that had been running YouTube all night on autoplay and that had serendipitously gotten to this video.
As my brain awoke I found myself listening to the guy who talked—Sam Harris—and I was struck by how straightforward and convincing his arguments were.
In fact, they were so strong that I felt that if I weren’t already an atheist, I would automatically “see the light” on listening to it.
After considering his arguments believing in God feels completely ridiculous.
I think that if you believe in God, this video may interest you.
It’s very difficult to change one’s worldview by watching a video, but this guy provides extremely compelling arguments.
I’ve made the video jump to the bit where Sam Harris talks. Enjoy!
